Borussia Dortmund was founded on December 19, 1909.

On December 20, 1909, Borussia Dortmund registered their first binding constitution before the courts. This legal step solidified the club's structure and operations.

On September 8, 1913, a BVB game was struck from the records because the goal size was incorrect. This incident led to the match being invalidated and not counted in the official records.

The board of BVB made a significant decision during a meeting at the Wildschutz, Oesterholzstrasse 60. They decided to have weekly public gatherings where the captains of the men's teams would announce their selections for upcoming games for discussion and debate.

On May 24, 1919, the Ballspiel-Verein ”Borussia 1909“, Dortmund, registered its first club constitution before the courts. The constitution included rules such as fines for missing competitive games without a valid reason and for leaving the field without permission.

Stadion Rote Erde was inaugurated in 1926 as the home ground for Borussia Dortmund.

In 1929, Borussia Dortmund faced a financial crisis after a failed attempt to sign paid professional footballers resulted in the team accumulating significant debt. The club was saved from bankruptcy by a generous local supporter who covered the financial shortfall.

The Bundesliga was created at the 1962 DFB convention in Dortmund. Borussia Dortmund, the club from the city, were the last champions of the pre-Bundesliga era and founding members of the new league.

Borussia Dortmund won their third German Championship in 1963.

In 1965, Borussia Dortmund won its first DFB-Pokal, a significant achievement in German football.

In 1966, Borussia Dortmund became the first German club to win the European Cup, marking a significant milestone in German soccer history.

In 1974, the Westfalenstadion replaced the Stadion Rote Erde as the stadium of Borussia Dortmund. The decision was made due to the increasing popularity of Borussia Dortmund and the need for a larger stadium to accommodate the growing number of supporters.

In 1989, Borussia Dortmund claimed the German SuperCup after facing financial difficulties in the 70s and 80s. This victory marked a resurgence for the club.

1991 was a turning point for Borussia Dortmund, marking the beginning of a period characterized by 'Rise, Fall and Rise again'. This year played a crucial role in shaping the club's recent history.

In 1992, Ottmar Hitzfeld was hired as the coach of Borussia Dortmund, marking a turning point for the club's future success.

Despite finishing fourth in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund made it to the 1993 UEFA Cup final where they lost 6-1 on aggregate to Juventus. However, they received DM25 million in prize money which allowed them to sign key players for future success.

In the mid-90s, under the management of Otmar Hitzfeld, Borussia Dortmund won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 1995 and 1996. This success marked a significant period known as the 'Golden Age' for the club.

The Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA was established in 1996.

Dortmund achieved success by winning the Champions League under coach Hitzfeld. However, Hitzfeld's departure to Bayern Munich following this triumph was a significant setback for the club.

In 1998, as defending champions, Borussia Dortmund reached the Champions League semi-final but faced challenges with key players missing due to injuries and departures. They were defeated by Real Madrid in the semi-final.

In October 2000, Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA's stock was introduced to the stock market, making it the first and only publicly traded sports club on the German stock market. Various stakeholders, including the sports club Borussia Dortmund e.V., Bernd Geske, and widely spread shareholdings, own percentages of the company.

In 2001-02, Borussia Dortmund claimed the Bundesliga title.

In the 2002-03 season, Borussia Dortmund advanced to the second group stage of the Champions League.

In the 2003-04 season, Borussia Dortmund encountered financial difficulties due to poor management, heavy debt, and struggles in the UEFA Champions League. The club had to seek financial assistance from Bayern Munich to pay their payroll.

Despite a miserable start, Borussia Dortmund managed to rally and finish seventh in the Bundesliga. The club was unable to secure a place in the UEFA Cup through the Fair Play draw.

Borussia Dortmund unexpectedly faced serious relegation trouble for the first time in years during the 2006-07 season. The club went through three coaches and appointed Thomas Doll to avoid relegation.

In the 2007-08 season, Borussia Dortmund finished 13th in the Bundesliga but reached the DFB-Pokal final against Bayern Munich, where they lost 2-1 in extra time. The final appearance qualified Dortmund for the UEFA Cup.

Thomas Doll resigned on 19 May 2008, and Jürgen Klopp was appointed as the new coach of Borussia Dortmund. This marked the beginning of the Klopp era at the club.

Under Jürgen Klopp's management, Borussia Dortmund improved from the previous season, finishing fifth in the Bundesliga and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

On 4 December 2010, Borussia Dortmund became Herbstmeister (Autumn Champion) in the Bundesliga, leading the league at the winter break. This achievement set the stage for their successful season under Jürgen Klopp.

The 2011-12 season marked another Bundesliga title victory for Borussia Dortmund.

After seven years of coaching Borussia Dortmund, Jürgen Klopp revealed on April 15, 2015, that he would be leaving the club, marking the end of an era.

Following Jürgen Klopp's announcement of departure, Borussia Dortmund swiftly announced on April 19, 2015, that Thomas Tuchel would succeed Klopp as the head coach.

On April 11, 2017, three explosions occurred near Borussia Dortmund's team bus on the way to a Champions League match against AS Monaco. Defender Marc Bartra was injured in the incident. Despite the unfortunate event, Dortmund went on to lose the match 2-3 to AS Monaco.

On May 27, 2017, Borussia Dortmund won the 2016-17 DFB-Pokal by defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in the final. The winning goal came from a penalty converted by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, securing Dortmund's victory in the tournament.

In January 2018, Peter Stöger, the interim coach, made signings for Dortmund including Manuel Akanji and Michy Batshuayi.

In the summer of 2018, Lucien Favre was appointed as the manager and head coach of Borussia Dortmund.

In the 2019-20 season, Borussia Dortmund clinched the DFL Supercup as their only silverware of the season.

After a humiliating 5–1 defeat to Stuttgart in Matchday 11 of the Bundesliga, Lucien Favre was removed from his position as the manager of Borussia Dortmund. Assistant manager Edin Terzić took over as the caretaker for the remainder of the season.

Under the caretaker management of Edin Terzić, Borussia Dortmund won the DFB-Pokal by defeating RB Leipzig 4–1 in the final.
