Burnley Football Club was founded in 1882.

In March 1936, Tommy Lawton became the youngest player to appear for Burnley at 16 years and 174 days. After scoring 16 goals in 25 appearances, Lawton moved to Everton in December 1936 for a then record fee.

In 1946, Burnley officially re-registered their kit colors as claret and blue, partly due to the influence of readers' letters to the Burnley Express. This move solidified the club's identity with the iconic claret and blue combination.

The record home attendance for Burnley in the league stands at 52,869, achieved during a First Division game against Blackpool on 11 October 1947.

In 1982, POCO became Burnley's first official kit sponsor, marking the beginning of a trend where the club would have various sponsors featured on their jerseys. This move signified a new era of commercial partnerships in football.

In the 2001-02 season, Burnley narrowly missed out on the play-offs due to goal difference.

In the 2006-2007 season, Burnley F.C. reached the Championship playoffs under the management of Steve Cotterill.

In the 2008-09 season, Burnley reached the Football League Cup semi-finals and secured promotion to the F.A. Premier League after winning the play-offs, defeating Sheffield United in the final.

In January 2010, Owen Coyle departed Burnley to manage local rivals Bolton Wanderers, leading to his replacement by former Burnley player Brian Laws and a subsequent decline in the team's performance resulting in relegation after a single season.

In the 2009-2010 season, Burnley F.C. secured promotion to the Premier League under the management of Brian Laws.

In October 2012, Sean Dyche was named as the manager of Burnley, and under his leadership, the team successfully returned to the Premier League in the 2013–14 season despite financial constraints and a small squad.
