The Economist was first published in September 1843 with the mission to take part in a contest between intelligence and ignorance.

The Economist was established in 1850 and has been reporting on global political, business, scientific, technological, and cultural developments for over 170 years.

The paper included its first non-epistolary chart—a tree map visualising the size of coal fields in America and England—in November 1854.

Circulation increased rapidly after 1945, reaching 100,000 by 1970.

With over 75 years of experience, it has been instrumental in assisting businesses, financial firms, and governments in comprehending global changes and identifying opportunities and risks.

Economist Conferences was established as a division of Economist Intelligence Unit in 1956 to offer government roundtables.

Ownership of the 50% shareholding passed to Pearson plc when they bought The Financial Times Limited (FT) in 1957.

In 1971, The Economist changed its large broadsheet format into a smaller magazine-style perfect-bound formatting.

In 1995, The Economist Group acquired the Journal of Commerce, a US-based provider of information for the shipping and transportation industries.

The Economist organised a global futurist writing competition, The World in 2050, co-sponsored by Royal Dutch/Shell, with a first prize of US$20,000 and publication in The Economist's annual flagship publication, The World In. Over 3,000 entries were submitted from around the world.

Circulation had risen to near 1 million by 2000.

In July 2004, The Economist Group launched an upmarket lifestyle magazine called Intelligent Life, an annual publication.

In January 2005, The Economist published a survey of corporate social responsibility, which generated critical letters from organizations such as Oxfam, the World Food Programme, United Nations Global Compact, the Chairman of BT Group, an ex-Director of Shell, and the UK Institute of Directors.

In its issue dated 24 March 2007, The Economist ran a critique of Amnesty International and human rights, which led to a reply from Amnesty and several other letters in support of the organization, including one from the head of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

The Economist called for Bill Clinton's impeachment.

In September 2009, The Economist launched a Twitter account for their Data Team.

Launched in 2010, the Ideas People Channel is a vertical online advertising network of around 50 sites defined by the mindset of the audience.

Since April 2017, the Bagehot column in The Economist, named after 19th-century British constitutional expert Walter Bagehot, has been written by Adrian Wooldridge, who succeeded David Rennie.

In October 2018, The Economist introduced a 'Graphic Detail' featuring large charts and maps in both their print and digital editions which ran until November 2023.
