João Lourenço, born in 1954, has been the President of Angola since 2017. Prior to his presidency, he served as Minister of Defence and later became the Chairman of the ruling MPLA party. He succeeded José Eduardo dos Santos after the MPLA won the majority in the 2017 legislative election.
