The Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS, originated in 2004 as a jihadist organization. It gained global prominence in 2014 by capturing territories in Iraq and Syria. After losing control in 2019, it resorted to insurgency tactics. Despite being designated a terrorist organization, it maintained a presence in Africa.
