DJI

In 2003, Frank Wang enrolled as a college student in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He later founded the DJI company in 2006.

DJI was founded in 2006 by Frank Wang, a graduate of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, with a vision to create reliable and accessible drone technology.

In 2009, DJI's components enabled a team to successfully pilot a drone around the peak of Mt. Everest, showcasing the capabilities of the company's technology in challenging environments.

In 2011, Wang and Colin Guinn established DJI North America as a subsidiary company with a focus on selling drones to the mass market.

The Matrice 100 drone was launched on July 6, 2015. It is a fully programmable and customizable drone designed for industrial applications such as surveying, inspection, search and rescue, and firefighting.

In May 2016, DJI introduced the Phantom 4 drone, which was the first consumer UAV equipped with advanced computer vision and sensing technology. It featured front and bottom obstacle avoidance systems, setting a new standard for safety and intelligence in drones.

DJI released their first ever compact and foldable drone, the DJI Mavic Pro, in September 2016. The Mavic Pro was designed to be portable and compact, unlike their previous Phantom drones, and featured powerful features such as a 3-Axis gimbal system and a 4K 12-megapixel camera.

The DJI Mavic Pro was released in October 2016, featuring 4k video, obstacle avoidance, object tracking, and AI capabilities. It was a groundbreaking product that revolutionized the drone industry.

DJI launched its Mavic Pro drone in November 2016, coinciding with reports of GoPro Karma drones experiencing issues and falling from the sky due to battery connectivity problems.

In February 2017, Da-Jiang Innovations (DJI) established itself as the global frontrunner in drone technology, capturing approximately 70% of the market share worldwide. The company's popular Mavic and Phantom drones played a pivotal role in popularizing consumer drones.

In May 2017, DJI introduced the DJI Spark, their smallest and most affordable drone at the time. It featured a 2-Axis HD 1080p 12-megapixel camera and innovative Gesture flight mode for easy control.

In July 2017, the United States Department of the Interior raised concerns about DJI's software not meeting information sharing requirements. DJI later introduced offline mode to address these concerns.

In August 2017, DJI responded to complaints of drones switching off and falling while flying by releasing a mandatory battery firmware update.

In November 2017, DJI released the DJI Goggles RE (Racing Edition), which is designed for compatibility with racing quadcopters. It features dual LC display screens, wireless connectivity, and direct photo and video capture control.

On 30 March 2018, the Israel Defense Forces employed DJI's Matrice 600 drones to release tear gas from above, showcasing the diverse applications of DJI drones in military operations.

On June 5, 2018, Axon, a police body cam and Taser manufacturer, announced a collaboration with DJI to distribute surveillance drones to U.S. police departments.

On 4 August 2018, two Matrice 600 drones detonated explosives near Avenida Bolívar, Caracas, in an apparent assassination attempt on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, highlighting the misuse of DJI drones for malicious purposes.

On January 21, 2019, DJI revealed that an internal investigation had discovered significant fraud committed by employees who manipulated the costs of components for personal profit. The company estimated the fraud to be worth up to CN¥1 billion (US$147 million) but clarified that it did not result in a full-year loss for 2018.

On June 11, 2019, DJI unveiled the RoboMaster S1, its first consumer ground drone designed for educational purposes. The S1 is controlled via Wi-Fi and an app on various devices, requiring assembly and programming by the user.

The DJI RoboMaster EP was officially released on March 9, 2020, supporting third-party sensors and open-source hardware. It offers advanced features for robotics enthusiasts.

On March 2, 2021, DJI launched the DJI FPV drone, a hybrid drone combining FPV and high-speed racing capabilities with a cinematic camera and innovative motion controller.
